If you are looking for a getaway to somewhere with spectacular views and incredible food… put Queenstown at the top of your list. Tim and I discovered that kiwis know the secret to a successful holiday (food, fun and fabulous views… oh wait and wine!). Scroll below to read our vacay tips!

If there was one meal I could eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner it would be from Fergburger. Nothing  (seriously nothing!!) can prepare you for this bun of deliciousness.  The fluffy bread is the perfect casing to fresh ingredients. There are so many varieties to choose from that you could only make one mistake here – not ordering more than one!  Timing wise, it doesn’t really matter if you go for breakfast, lunch or dinner because there are always crowds. The service is pretty quick so don’t let the line worry you. If you do happen to overdose on burgers, check out Fergbakery because they have breads, pies and cakes, which you wont be able to say no to either.

Tim and I received so many suggestions to visit Botswana Butchery. With roaring log fires inside and outside, this restaurant was another absolute winner. There were 16 pages to the drinks menu so we felt obliged to try a few out (that was our excuse anyway). On the first page, the mulled wine caught my eye as it noted a blend of cinnamon, star anise, cloves, citrus zest, vanilla, cardamom, nutmeg and some other “secret” ingredients. Whatever ingredients it had, the excellent resulting taste was no secret!! The food involved interesting combinations of flavours, textures and cooking techniques. The fresh ingredients are sourced locally so Tim gave this place another huge tick. If you are lucky enough to go, make sure you make a booking because this place sure does pack out.

If you are looking for something a little lower key, you can check out Public Kitchen on Steamer Wharf. They recommend sharing the many options on the menu. The pork was farmed minutes up the road in Geraldine and the other produce was caught in the hills and off the coast. We feasted on a baked lamb rack and cider roasted pulled pork with caramelised pears. We finished off with the chocolate cheescake which was beyond words (I am still salivating so bear with me while I try contain myself… gulp!).

Dessert can also be served in liquid form for the hipsters, trendsetters and experimentalists. Let me introduce you to the Apple and Rhubarb Crumble cocktail. The rhubarb is pureed fresh in their own kitchen and mixed with citrus vodka, cinnamon syrup and apple juice. Mmmmm I guess you will have to try it for yourself… or I will need another one to describe more details to you.

We didn’t get to check these restaurants out but we heard lots of great things about RATA Dining and Madam Woo. What other places should we add to our list when we go back?

We stayed at Peppers Beacon which was walking distance from the Town Centre. The scenic accommodation provided an excellent base for downtime after skiing, eating and living it up in Queenstown. Peppers Beacon made framing those Instagram worthy snaps of Queenstown’s staggering beauty even easier. On arrival they serve warm bread straight from the oven (there were rumours circulating that this is the food they serve in heaven!).

So we couldn’t really go to Queenstown and not ski however even after lots of runs, I am far from a pro. I did ski and manage to avoid causing too much destruction while Tim snowboarded like a seasoned pro (an Olympian in comparison to me even!). We spent the first two days at Coronet Peak which was packed full of powder! On our last day we skied at The Remarkables mountain range which provided another roller coaster terrain for hours of enjoyment.

After exploring Queenstown, we stayed two nights at Blanket Bay which is a short 45 min drive from Queenstown’s centre. The drive is stunning and once you arrive the view is even more breathtaking. I can understand why Blanket Bay has been voted as one of the World’s Best Luxury Lodges. The sprawling grounds swept across the fringes of Lake Wakatipu. The main lodge is constructed out of timber and stone with the most magnificent detailing.  Tim and I felt as if we went back in time with the Games Room. The game lovers can pick from pool, shuffleboard, backgammon, chess and cards (this is more my forte).  As the perfect accompaniment to gaming, the self-serve bar is stocked with free beer and softdrink. The spa overlooks the beautiful grounds and features separate male/female steam rooms with an adjoining pool which looks onto Lake Wakatipu. Blanket Bay showcased excellence and luxury in a venue which is on my must visit again list.

Tim and I went on a magic horseback adventure.  It was pretty chilly but certainly we were both glad we did it. You don’t need to be born to the saddle to enjoy a few hours on riding in the landscape. Along the journey we learnt a lot more about the local area from our instructors. We saw sheep, cattle and deer and one or two wild goats along the course. The lake glistened in the sun and the reserves extended far into the distance. The horseback trot was a unique way to take in the surrounding landscape and undulating mountain peaks.

We also went on an incredible helicopter ride which I will never forget! Queenstown truly delivered much more than we expected from a small city. I would love to hear your favourite travel tips and let me know if you get to explore these tips too!
