Spring Racing

I Love / The Edit / What I Wore
categories: I Love The Edit What I Wore

The biggest days in the spring racing calendar are almost here so it is time to giddy-up! When it comes to the crowd favourites, Derby day, Cup day and Oaks day come in at the top of my list. With these iconic days just around the corner, it is time to prep some outfits for trackside events or related festivities you’ll be attending. I had lots of fun getting dressed up with Karen Millen to prepare my fave looks for the racing season.

A go-to ensemble doesn’t need to cost a fortune. These versatile key pieces will be show stoppers in your wardrobe for dressy events outside the spring carnival too.

There is always a lot of heat and competition among the racegoing outfits so get yourself something to stand out. Personally, when it comes to celebrating the spring racing season, I always want to go for something classic and eye-catching. The simplicity of an outfit should not be underrated.

Haven’t sorted your outfit yet? Don’t panic  – here are three combos you can’t go wrong with!

Nothing achieves spring racing style goals like a gorgeous floral print. This green piece features a v-neck and asymmetrical cut that gathers at the waist. The classy cut is perfect for a stylish race day celebration in my books. I paired it with some nude court heels to keep things simple in the shoe department and to avoid looking overdone. If you are planning to wear something bold and bright, keep your accessories to a minimum so that they don’t compete with your look.

In keeping with the floral theme, the lace combined with the beautiful embroidery makes this piece a showstopper. A cut-out at the back adds further intricacy to the design. Again I wanted to keep the accessories side of things simple, so I went for the suede ruffle heels which I have worn before. In terms of headwear, I love something with a bit of va-va-voom (think crystals, bows, diamantes, flowers and intricate patterns). Don’t be afraid to pick something a little exotic for your headwear because that is all the rage these days.

I saw this baby on the rack and it had my name all over it! The dress is simply tailored to perfection and looks so divine on. I liked the fitted style and the exaggerated fold-over top makes the chic piece what it is. The cream fabric means this neutral piece can be worn with accessories in every colour and it is easy to mix and match with other pieces in the wardrobe. When you go for something in white, cream or blush tone it isn’t a bad idea to add in some hints of gold to warm up the look. A gold-tone chain on this bag adds in a directional feel. Sunglasses are a must and mine were also from Karen Millen.

A bag like this is the perfect finishing touch for a classic shirt look too. This bag is a great size for squeezing in the important essentials. What to pack in your bag? Lipstick, concealer, mascara, a race guide book and of course a charger for your phone (especially if you are snap happy like me!). Don’t overpack your bag because you want something lightweight and easy to carry around all day.

A word of caution for the shoe department from a seasoned race day veteran: opting for a lower heel and a chunkier style will reduce the likelihood of a foot-hangover in the morning.

Trying on these pieces made getting ready for the spring racing calendar almost as fun as being there on the day.
