Black tie dressing decoded

On Wednesday evening I attended the 2017 Prix de marie claire Fashion and Beauty Awards. The lavish black-tie gala dinner was hosted at Stage 7, Fox Studios in Sydney.

The celeb attendees included Jackie Frank, Asher Keddie, Dannii Minogue, Jesinta Franklin, Nicky and Simone Zimmermann, Kit Willow, Toni Maticevski, Dion Lee, Kate Waterhouse and Napoleon Perdis.

What’s the Prix de marie claire Fashion and Beauty Awards all about? The special event is held to celebrate outstanding achievement in style, innovation and design.

We were assembled around one gorgeous long table which was adorned by a MAGNIFICENT long line of chandeliers. It wasn’t how my dinner table usually looks, but we all marveled at the creativity behind the set up.

We feasted on an entree of carrots, feta and almonds, followed by baked blue eye cod for the main. For the dessert lovers, a white chocolate hemisphere encased a dark chocolate mousse.

It was such a glamorous night and I love any excuse to dress well. I went for a ‘sexy’ look in my billowy Rebecca Vallance dress.  After going to so many events I’ve realised that there is no need to freak out when you see ‘black tie’ on an invite. There are some simple do’s and don’ts which it way easier to nail the black tie dress code.

– Seize the opportunity and go all out with something which makes you feel glam! Think midi length or floor-length gowns made of luxurious fabrics. It is not everyday that you have a black tie event so I always like to make the most of the special occasion opting for pieces which make me feel a million dollars.

– Of course, quality dresses can be expensive (and often they are responsible for post purchase regret). Spending a lot of money on a heavily on-trend statement piece can be risky. There is also the option of renting something special instead of having to fork out the large sums. Today there are some many companies which allow you to hire branded dresses, suits and skirts for a fraction of the price of owning it.

– Of course if you have the funding available by all means splash out and invest in a timeless piece. Always look for something that suits your body shape and is made from a durable fabric.

– If you’re not a girly girl or just want to mix things up, take a leaf out of my book and go for the dressy evening suit option. You need to make sure you get the cut right so that it is classy and flattering (without looking too masculine).

– As you are wearing something gorgeous and dressy, complementing the look with your hair and makeup is also important.  If your dress is super ‘out there’, no need to go overboard with your hair and makeup choices. On the other hand if you are wearing a simple black number, turn things up in the makeup department. My favourite tricks are to apply some bold red lippy and get a voluminous blow dry.

– There are certain times when showing lots of skin is totally acceptable. However too much skin with plunging necklines and thigh high splits need to be moderated for black tie events.

– The most important thing to remember is to smile and be comfortable in what you are wearing! In terms of maximizing comfort, wear in your shoes before you debut them so that your tootsies can adjust.
